How to keep yourselves entertained while camping

Wild Camping Lake District

Camping can be a great way to enjoy the freedom of the British countryside and scenic coastal spots. In fact, a recent survey shows that over 40% of people in the UK go camping once a year or more. But, what about those inevitable moments when the weather turns, the campfire dwindles and you’ve exhausted all the local attractions?

Our guide can help you keep your group entertained on your next trip, wherever you pitch up.

Embrace the great outdoors

Many people enjoy camping because of its natural simplicity. It’s easy to lace up your walking boots and explore nearby trails, taking in the fresh air and stunning scenery. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous you could try your hand at geocaching, a real-world treasure hunt using GPS coordinates to find hidden caches left by other participants.

Birdwatching is another great activity, especially as the UK boasts a rich variety of feathered friends. With a good birdwatching guide or app, you can identify different species and learn about their fascinating behaviours.

Unleash your inner games master

Board games are a classic camping companion, offering hours of fun around the campfire or in the tent during a rainy afternoon. Pack some lightweight favourites or travel-sized editions of staples like Scrabble or Cluedo. Alternatively, load up your smartphone with entertainment or give online games such as mobile slots a go.

If you prefer to make the most of the outdoors, a frisbee, football or a badminton set can provide some friendly competition in the open space of a campsite.

Channel your creativity

There are plenty of opportunities to unleash your creative side. Sketch the beautiful scenery or write stories or poems inspired by the setting. Nature photography is another great way to capture the memories and appreciate the beauty of your surroundings. Even a basic smartphone camera can take stunning photos of landscapes and wildlife.

If you’re into music, take along an instrument and use inspiration from nature as you write your next piece. You could even get the whole group involved and ask them to contribute to the lyrics.

Stargazing

The UK boasts some fantastic dark sky locations, perfect for gazing at the wonders of the universe. Away from the city lights, and on clear nights, you might be able to experience a breathtaking display of stars, planets and, depending on the location, even the milky way. Download a stargazing app to identify constellations and planets, or simply lie back on a blanket and marvel at the vastness of space.

With a little planning, your next camping trip will be filled with unforgettable moments, creating lasting memories for everyone.
